Balancing Motherhood & Work: A Year of Reflection

Meet Lauren

Allow me to formally introduce myself—I’m Lauren Hoeske, Legal Office Administrator here at Athena Legal Solutions. Outside of supporting our clients and team, I wear another very important title: mom. A year ago, my world shifted in the most beautiful way when I became a mother. Nothing truly prepares you for the moment you hold your baby for the first time—the rush of love, the weight of responsibility, and the realization that life will never be the same.

The Balancing Act

This first year has been a dance between work and motherhood. Some days, I feel like I’ve nailed it—emails answered, meetings wrapped, and still present for dinner, snuggles and bedtime stories. Other days, it feels like everything collides at once, and I’m pulled in two directions: deadlines waiting on one side, and a little hand reaching out on the other.

Learning to balance has meant giving myself permission to not be perfect. It’s meant accepting help, setting boundaries, and recognizing that “doing it all” doesn’t mean doing it all at the same time.

The Challenges

Motherhood is messy—literally and figuratively. Sleepless nights, tough decisions, and the constant hum of mom-guilt are all real. There have been moments when I’ve questioned if I was giving enough—enough to my baby, to my work, to myself.

But I’ve learned that every working mom wrestles with these same questions. The truth is, balance isn’t about perfection—it’s about presence. When I’m with my little one, I focus on being fully there. When I’m working, I remind myself I’m building something meaningful, not just for me, but for my family.

The Rewards

For every challenge, there has been a reward that makes it all worth it. Watching my daughter grow, learn, and change in this first year has been pure magic. Seeing her eyes light up when I walk into the room, hearing laughter after a long day, or simply rocking her to sleep has redefined what success means to me.

At the same time, I’ve found new strength and clarity in my professional life. Motherhood has sharpened my priorities and deepened my purpose. I’ve become more efficient, more intentional, and more motivated to build a life that blends ambition with presence.

Motherhood Through the Lens of the 5 Pillars of Wealth

Recently at Athena, we shared about the 5 Pillars of Wealth—time, financial, social, physical, and mental wealth. Over the past year, I’ve realized how much these pillars also apply to motherhood:

    • Time Wealth: I’ve learned just how precious it is. Every nap, milestone, and giggle is a reminder that time is the most valuable currency. Every moment matters, and I’ve become more intentional about where my hours go.

    • Financial Wealth: Planning for the future feels more important than ever—it’s about creating security not just for me, but for my family’s long-term well-being.

    • Social Wealth: Motherhood has deepened my appreciation for community, from supportive friends to other working moms who “get it.”

    • Physical Wealth: Taking care of myself—rest, exercise, nutrition—isn’t just about me anymore. My health has become essential so I can show up fully for my family and my work.

    • Mental Wealth: Motherhood has stretched me, tested me, and strengthened me. Building resilience, practicing gratitude, and protecting my mental energy have been game-changers.

Looking at motherhood through these pillars has helped remind me that wealth isn’t just about money—it’s about building a life that is full, balanced, and deeply meaningful.

Looking Ahead

This first year of motherhood has been humbling, stretching, and incredibly rewarding. I know the challenges will keep coming—but so will the joy. And if I’ve learned anything, it’s that motherhood and work don’t have to be at odds. With grace, support, and a little flexibility, they can beautifully coexist.

To every mom trying to balance it all: you are not alone. Be kind to yourself – you are doing better than you think!
